Mornington Crescent GameI'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue features the game Mornington Crescent created by Geoffrey Perkins a long running comedy producer, writer, and performer, who has been a central figure in British comedy broadcasting, He became BBC Television's Head of Comedy in 1995. Mornington Crescent, popularised by the BBC Radio 4 programme I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, was named after the Mornington Crescent London Underground (tube) station, which is at the junction of Camden High Street; Eversholt Street and Hampstead Road in London postcode area NW1.
Play Mornington Crescent: Players make moves by announcing the names of stations within the London Underground system, the winner being the first to introduce " Mornington Crescent". The game is a parody of complicated strategy games, and its comedic heart and humour lies particularly in the fact it satirises the usually complex rules and terminology that evolve around games such as Chess, Backgammon or contract bridge. Mornington Crescent Rules: Around two hundred people each year do write in to the show asking for a copy of the rules and are usually referred to "N F Stovold’s Mornington Crescent: Rules and Origins" (Mornington Crescent Little Book) but told it is out of print. This perpetuates the main comedy value behind Mornington Crescent: the fact, I am sorry to say, that there is no "game" and thefore are actually no rules at all!
There are other Mornington Crescents in Benfleet, Essex, SS7; Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO22; Buckley, Clwyd, CH7; Canvey Island, Essex, SS8; Derby, DE22; Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1; Hounslow, TW5; Hove, East Sussex, BN3; Manchester, M14 and Nuthall, Nottingham, NG16. |
